Only 1 in 5 plastic bottles are recycled

The energy that is required to make one plastic bottle could recycle 10 plastic bottles.

Recycling minimises the need to use our natural resources. Using recycled materials significantly reduces the energy and carbon emissions used during the manufacturing process.

It can take up to 1,000 years for a single plastic bottle to decompose in a landfill site. Because of the long lifespan of plastic recycling, the material can optimize the use of plastic and eliminate the need to create new plastic.

How do we recycle plastic?
Once the waste is collected by our Solowaste team it is then transported to a facility where the waste is then sorted into different categories. The plastic is then thoroughly washed and melted into small pallets.

The pallets can then be re-melted and used to create products such as reusable crates and pallets, wheelie bins or food bins and can even be used in some forms of construction work.

The possibility of what plastic can do and be used for is endless but the overuse of single-use plastics can be harmful to the environment.

Introducing Amy to the Solowaste team

Amy

As a recent graduate from Bournemouth University in the heart of a global pandemic I began asking myself the obvious question, what do I do now? Having a degree in Marketing Communications and fire in my stomach to work in something that I was passionate about I found myself lost applying for jobs, some may say I was down in the dumps, but that might be just where I found my career.

Working for a company that shares the same green values as me was key. Solowaste strives to deliver less than 10% of commercial and private waste to landfills, recycling, and repurposing the materials as a way to battle the climate crisis we currently face. Using recycled materials such as glass and plastic that would have otherwise spent hundreds of years decomposing in landfills blew my mind.

Entering the industry with my re-usable cup in hand, I am excited to continue to grow my knowledge of material management and different waste solutions.

The saying goes one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, I think that man may have worked in waste solutions as in the world of recycling all trash is treasure if you know what to do with it.
